About Us

Twenty year ago when I wrote The Big, Big Man and the Tiny Little Mouse I had no idea that it would someday become a beautifully illustrated children's book. It was written because my son Clint, who had physical and mental difficulties needed help in life. I bought a small trailer for Clint to live in, but he never moved into that trailer. It was a tiny little trailer for a big, big man. Clint was a very large man, his health issues ended when he passed away on December 15, 2012. The poem, inspired by Clint sat dormant in my desk until 2018 when I was put in touch with Danish Artist, Nina Broen. My friend and local artist James W. Johnson was my first choice to illustrate The Big, Big Man, but he declined. However, he had recently met Nina through Instagram and advised me to contact her. I emailed an introduction letter, and Nina responded and invited me to send the poem to her. In just a couple of days Nina sent the book cover and 3 or 4 pages. I was captivated by what she had submitted. In no time at all she completed the illustrations and we were off to the copyright process and then the book maker.

It took a while, but in 2020 we received our first book. It was unfortunate that we were dealing with Covid in 2020 and that hindered the marketing of The Big, Big Man. Our only outlet was the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market and the support of my many friends. Nina's art work on The Big, Big Man was the inspiration for the second children's poem which I titled Skinny Katie and Her Potbelly Pig Named Sadie. Nina has a unique style that has an Old European flavor and it is reminiscent of the Golden Book series that I remember from my own childhood. I began a third poem entitled Very Hairy Larry and His Hairless Cat Named Mary, with the hopes that each book would promote the others. Each of these poems have human characters who have animal counterparts that are the opposite of themselves. Our books promote diversity and inclusion. We hope to send positive messages to our young and old readers alike. The books encourage wholesome activities and kindness. After our 3 years of collaboration Nina and I have found that we are like minded and have developed a true trust and affection for each other despite the fact that we have never met or even spoken to one another. Our work is done by internet communications alone. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be a Children's book author. But I must say that it seems to be a dream come true. I meet so many people who aspire to write a children's book and realize that I have accomplished, with Nina's help the dream that so many others have, but are unable to complete.

Together Nina and I have brought our dreams into reality. We are awaiting copyrights for our fourth book and hope that we can continue to collaborate on more work in the future. We are marketing our books at festivals and small reading events at schools and libraries. As a senior citizen without grandchildren I find it quite rewarding to spend time with the children who I am writing for. Children are a source of joy and their innocence and inquisitive nature bring me great happiness. Nina and I are hopeful that our books will inspire and educate our audience. My long term hopes are that 40 years from now people will talk about how these little books were a part of their childhood, and how much they loved them. When asked what age group these books are designed for I would suggest if your child is being read to by grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles these books are ideal. But I would add that people of all ages seem to be dazzled by the illustrations and so I think these books are for all ages. Nina and I are happy to have these books available at the Lubbock Libraries for the public to enjoy.
